How to make a coloring book for KDP

Low-content or not

KDP lists coloring books under “not generally low-content”. That changes the setup: do not tick the Low-content box, and choose your ISBN option the way you would for any other paperback.

One design per sheet

A printed sheet carries two pages — KDP’s guidelines put even page numbers on the left and odd ones on the right. Put each design on a right-hand page and keep the back of it for something that does not matter if ink shows through — in this file it is a strip of circles for testing colors.

Bleed, only if the art reaches the edge

These mandalas sit inside the margins, so the file has no bleed and the page size equals the trim: 8.5" × 11". If you add art that runs off the page, the whole file needs bleed: 0.125" more width and 0.25" more height (8.625" × 11.25" for this trim), with at least 0.375" between your content and the trimmed edge.

Line weight and images

KDP asks for lines of at least 0.75 pt; the outlines here are 1.1 pt and the details 0.75 pt. If you add scanned or drawn art as images, KDP’s minimum is 300 DPI.

Page count and paper

An 8.5" × 11" paperback in black ink on white paper can have 24 to 590 pages. White paper is the usual choice for coloring; color ink is only worth paying for if the printed pages themselves are in color.

How to publish a template on KDP, in 5 steps

  1. Download the PDF in your trim size

Each file is a complete interior: the right page size, 120 pages (42 for the coloring book), margins already set. Nothing needs to be resized.

  2. Create a paperback on your KDP Bookshelf

For a notebook, planner, journal or log, tick Low-content under Categories on the details page — KDP rejects a low-content book without it. Coloring books are not low-content in KDP’s own list, so leave the box unticked for those.

  3. Set the print options

Black & white interior on white paper, the trim size of the file you downloaded, and No bleed. A low-content book can be published without an ISBN or with your own; it is not eligible for a free KDP ISBN.

  4. Upload the interior and a cover

Upload the PDF as the manuscript. The cover is yours to make: the cover calculator gives the full cover size and spine width for your trim and page count. KDP prints spine text only on books with more than 79 pages, so a 120-page book can carry it.

  5. Preview, order a proof, publish

Open Launch Previewer in the Book Preview section and fix anything it flags, order a printed proof if you want to hold it first, then set your price — the royalty calculator shows the printing cost and what you earn per copy.
